Urbani Balkoni

Urbani Balkoni is a competition proposal for an observation tower in Zagreb. It would stand 40 m tall south of the Sava River, near the proposed Green Belt connecting Park Mladenaca and City Park. A continuous ramp spirals up to a platform facing north over the river, with projecting balconies that face every direction.

The ramp is designed as a narrow concrete helicoid clad in Croatian oak, widening as it spirals up. Concrete and oak are plain materials that suit the surrounding landscape. The lowest balconies are sized for one or two people and the higher ones hold more. Their wide cantilevers nod to the Secession architecture of Zagreb.
