The UN Square Murals: Historic Promenade Of Jordan

‍Mural Honoring The Jordanian Troops

This mural represents the soldiers of Jordan’s peacekeeping forces.

The mural is a photo montage of the forces on the ground in the places where they served, operating army equipment.

The scenes are abstracted using a computer algorithm that reveals the image by varying the width of 150 monochrome strips.

Topographic World Map Of The Countries That Received Relief

The World Map Mural shows the places around the world where Jordan’s peacekeepers have provided aid.

The map is a three-dimensional relief of the world’s topography, designed to light up in interactive sequences.

Mural Honoring The Jordanian Peace Missions

This mural represents the humanitarian role of Jordan’s peacekeeping forces. The mural is a photo montage of the soldiers on duty: protecting civilians in conflict zones and providing shelter, food and medical aid.

The same algorithm abstracts these scenes into 150 strips. The strips are designed to be water-jet cut from brushed aluminum.

Since joining the United Nations in 1955, Jordan has taken part in humanitarian missions abroad and in the region. Jordan began taking part in UN peacekeeping operations in 1989, during the reign of the late King Hussein.

Based on the directions of the Supreme Commander of the Jordanian Armed Forces, His Majesty King Abdullah II, the United Nations Square was proposed to preserve the legacy of this chapter in the country’s history at the Historic Promenade of Jordan at the King Hussein Park in Amman, the country’s capital.

Our response is a design for three central murals that record Jordan’s contribution to the United Nations in the region and abroad. Set at the center of the square, they show Jordan’s peacekeepers and the relief they have brought to countries in need.

The three murals are:

- Mural Honoring The Jordanian Troops.

- Topographic World Map Of The Countries That Received Relief.

- Mural Honoring The Jordanian Peace Missions.
