Introduction
As cities in the Gulf grow, we see much of the space between buildings left unused. In Dubai, the 2040 Urban Master Plan, launched in 2021, plans to double the city’s green and recreational areas.
‘Modulus’ is a prototype of a modular, flexible urban furniture system. Its sculptural pieces are meant for informal use in public space. ‘Modulus’ proposes using design and digital fabrication to bring these unused spaces into use. The design aims to use lower-waste construction methods for public seating.
Modularity
Each of the three ‘Modulus’ typologies has a specific function, and together they form one continuous structure. People can sit, talk, rest or walk around it.
Digital Fabrication
Each module is digitally fabricated by 3D printing. The prototype modules were 3D printed in white concrete by robotic arms at Concreative. Dubai’s 3D Printing Strategy aims for a quarter of the emirate’s buildings to use 3D printing by 2030; Modulus applies the same technology to public seating.
Assembly
Robotic concrete 3D printing is accurate enough to produce complex forms. The pieces are printed off site and assembled in place, and the printer places material only where it is needed, with no formwork.
Flexible Arrangements
The systematic approach of ‘Modulus’ allows for various arrangements to fit in different locations in the city. Designed as a ‘kit of parts’, the system proposes printed concrete elements that can be produced in series to provide seating in public areas.
