House 00: Introduction


House 00 is a proposed retreat on Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah, for time alone and time with guests: a sheltered courtyard, limestone walls, long mountain views and a guest wing set apart from the family rooms.

High on the mountain, northeast of the city of Ras Al Khaimah, the site is remote and quiet.

The 2000 sqm house borrows from local residential architecture, with an inner courtyard and a separate Women’s Majlis and Men’s Majlis for the social life of an Emirati family. Outside, the limestone and glass façade reads as a single, clearly man-made mass in the mountain landscape.

The house is organized into two parts around an inner courtyard. Spaces are split between east and west wings based on their respective uses and expected visitors.

The façade pattern continues upward as a coffered slab over the courtyard, making a shaded outdoor room inside the house. A waterfall, heard across the courtyard, marks the way to an infinity pool overlooking the mountains.

Set in planting, the main entrance leads visitors into the west wing through a double-height reception hall that opens onto the dining area overlooking the courtyard, a few steps from the Women’s Majlis. Past the courtyard, the route ends in a double-height family living room, where a staircase leads up to the family’s private suite of four bedrooms.

The upper floor is rotated 45 degrees to align with the mountain cliff and face southeast. Daylight comes in through large windows in the living room and through skylights, which let light in without opening the rooms to view. In the east wing, the guest spaces line the pool. A study, a guest bedroom and the Men’s Majlis are set apart from the rest of the house for privacy. A separate soft kitchen, a small kitchen for serving and light cooking, faces the pool and the view and serves poolside events and barbecue parties.

Drawn in 2020, during the pandemic, House 00 is proposed as a place to withdraw from the city.

المنزل صفر مقترح لملاذ على جبل جيس في رأس الخيمة، يتّسع للعزلة ولاستقبال الضيوف معاً: فناء محمي، وجدران من الحجر الجيري، وإطلالات بعيدة على الجبال، وجناح للضيوف منفصل عن غرف العائلة.

يقع المنزل صفر عالياً على جبل جيس، شمال شرق مدينة رأس الخيمة، في موقع بعيد وهادئ.

يمتد المنزل على مساحة ٢٠٠٠ متر مربع، ويستعير من العمارة السكنية المحلية فناءً داخلياً ومجلساً للنساء وآخر للرجال، تلبيةً لاحتياجات الحياة الاجتماعية للأسرة الإماراتية. ومن الخارج، تبدو واجهة الحجر الجيري والزجاج كتلةً واحدة لا تخفي أنها من صنع الإنسان وسط المشهد الجبلي.

ينتظم المنزل في قسمين شرقي وغربي يضمّان فناءً داخلياً في كنفهما. وتنقسم فضاءات المنزل بين القسمين تبعاً لاستعمالات كل فضاء وزوّاره المحتملين.

يمتد نقش الواجهة إلى الأعلى ليصبح سقفاً صندوقياً فوق الفناء، فيصنع غرفة خارجية مظللة داخل المنزل. وينساب من الأعلى شلال مائي يضيف خريره إلى الفناء الداخلي. يقود الشلال زائر المنزل إلى بركة سباحة لانهائية تُطل بدورها على مناظر الجبال.

ويقع المدخل الرئيسي بين المزروعات. يدلف منه الزوار مباشرة إلى القسم الغربي من المنزل عبر بهو استقبال بارتفاع طابقين يُفضي بهم إلى منطقة الطعام المطلة على الفناء الداخلي، على بُعد خطوات من مجلس النساء. وبعد الفناء، ينتهي المسار في غرفة معيشة العائلة بارتفاع طابقين، حيث يصعد درج إلى الجناح الخاص بالعائلة، وفيه أربع غرف نوم. وينحرف الطابق العلوي بزاوية ٤٥ درجة ليحاذي جرف الجبل ويتّجه نحو الجنوب الشرقي. وتدخل الإضاءة الطبيعية إلى المنزل عبر نوافذ كبيرة في غرفة المعيشة وفتحات في السقف تُدخل ضوء النهار إلى الفضاء الداخلي دون المساس بخصوصية المنزل.

أما القسم الشرقي فتتراص فيه الفضاءات المُخصصة للضيوف بمحاذاة بركة السباحة. يضم القسم غرفة مكتب وغرفة نوم للضيوف ومجلساً للرجال، وكلها منفصلة عن باقي المنزل لمزيدٍ من الخصوصية. ويخدم مطبخ خفيف منفصل، يواجه بركة السباحة والمنظر، المناسباتِ حول البركة وحفلات الشواء.

صُمّم المنزل صفر عام ٢٠٢٠، في زمن الجائحة، ملاذاً للابتعاد عن المدينة.
