ARID

Introduction

ARID is an installation that stands for a post-drought landscape in Jordan and calls attention to the country’s water scarcity.
‍
Its geometry is taken from cracked, dry earth.
‍
Amman Design Week commissioned the piece for exhibition during its 2017 edition. The project’s materiality comes from processing natural, rough stone, imperfections included, with the precision of digital manufacturing.
‍
Robotic CNC arms milled natural Jordanian stone from the Al Hallabat area, in the north of Jordan, into individual pieces, each one different, from geometries generated by simulating ‘fractured cracking’. Plasma CNC cutters cut the steel base, which was assembled as a kit of parts.
‍
ARID went directly from computational design to production. Local factories in Jordan cut the parts, and local craftsmen finished them by hand. After the event, MEAN* installed the piece in the garden of the National Museum of Jordan, where it stands today.

‍

Design

Digital processing of the forms using a custom script. Each geometry is output into a folder, numbered as per the fabrication plan.

Process

Assembly process on-site: each block is raised and placed into its location as per plan.

The numbering system spirals from the center toward the edge of the installation.
