Audi Innovation Hub

Introduction

MEAN* (Middle East Architecture Network) designed and built the Audi Innovation Hub for Audi Middle East at Dubai Design Week 2018 in Dubai Design District (d3), Dubai: a built work of 165 sqm, using generative design and digital manufacturing. The Hub reflects Audi’s ethos, “Vorsprung durch Technik” (Advancement through Technology), and the theme of that year’s Audi Innovation Award, ‘Connections’.

Starting with a line, the simplest geometry that connects two bodies, MEAN* envisaged a curved structure sweeping through space, joining exterior and interior and woven with connecting lines.

It is built from aluminum, galvanized steel, tensile cables and recycled rubber from car tires.

The CNC-bent steel pipes guide the tensile cables, and together they enclose the space and work as one hybrid structure.

As these straight lines rotate, weave and overlap, they produce a moiré effect that seems to move.

The intention is to evoke the experience of a road trip, as the visitor walks around the Hub.

The architectural and structural layout is symmetrical, as a car is about its center line.
The mechanically fixed structure is identical on both halves of the central symmetry line, for ease of fabrication, assembly and reassembly.

An arched covering runs along the central spine of the space, fitted with generative lighting patterns that resemble symmetrical constellations. Lit up, the white structure contrasts with the matte black rubber surface, made and supplied by Bee’ah, that covers its façade.

The Hub showed two Audi models, including the then-new A7, and had an area for talks and a space for refreshment and gathering.

It hosted the week-long program of Audi Innovation Talks and gave showcase space to the winner of the annual Audi Innovation Award.

صمّمت مين* (شبكة الشرق الأوسط للعمارة) وبنت مركز أودي للابتكار لـ Audi Middle East في حي دبي للتصميم (d3) في دبي، بمناسبة أسبوع دبي للتصميم ٢٠١٨: عمل منفّذ بمساحة ١٦٥ متراً مربعاً. ويعبّر المركز عن شعار Audi “Vorsprung durch Technik” (التقدّم عبر التقنية)، وعن موضوع جائزة Audi للابتكار في ذلك العام، 'Connections'.

انطلقت مين* من الخط، أبسط شكل هندسي يصل بين جسمين، فتخيّلت هيكلاً منحنياً يمتدّ في الفراغ وتنسجه خطوط واصلة، ويربط الفراغ الخارجي بالداخلي.
وبُني المركز بأدوات التصميم التوليدي والتصنيع الرقمي، من الألمنيوم والفولاذ المجلفن وكابلات الشد والمطاط المعاد تدويره من إطارات السيارات.
وتوجّه الأنابيب الفولاذية المثنية بالتحكم الرقمي كابلات الشد، فتحيط معاً بالفراغ وتعمل هيكلاً هجيناً واحداً.

تدور هذه الخطوط المستقيمة وتتشابك وتتداخل، فتُحدث تأثير المواريه (Moiré) الذي يبدو كأنه يتحرّك. والغاية أن يعيش الزائر، وهو يتجوّل حول المركز، إحساساً يشبه رحلة بالسيارة. وتصميمه المعماري والإنشائي متناظر، كما تتناظر السيارة حول خطها المركزي.

فالهيكل المثبّت ميكانيكياً متطابق على جانبَي خط التناظر المركزي، ما يسهّل التصنيع والتجميع وإعادة التجميع.
ويعلو المحورَ المركزي للفراغ سقفٌ مقوّس زُوّد بأنماط إضاءة توليدية تشبه كوكبات نجمية متناظرة.
ويتباين الهيكل الأبيض المضاء مع سطح الإكساء المطاطي الأسود غير اللامع الذي يغطي واجهته، وقد صنّعته شركة بيئة وزوّدت المشروع به، من مطاط إطارات السيارات المعاد تدويره.

وضمّ المركز مساحة لعرض طرازين من Audi، منهما A7 الجديدة آنذاك، ومساحة للمحاضرات وأخرى للقاء والضيافة، واستضاف على مدى أسبوع برنامج Audi Innovation Talks، وخصّص مساحة لعرض الفائز بجائزة Audi السنوية للابتكار.
