The Migrant Kitchen

The Migrant Kitchen asked MEAN* to design its first two dine-in locations in New York, on the Upper West and Upper East Sides. The brief was to tell the restaurant's story consistently in each interior while giving every location an identity that echoes its neighborhood. Both plans are compact, at 60 m² and 30 m².

Elements of home kitchens from the Middle East to North America are reinterpreted in birch, ceramic tiles and custom-made mosaics. At 157 Columbus Avenue, an interlocking birch structure starts as a bench and branches toward the ceiling, with horizontal pieces that double as shelves. At 1433 First Avenue, birch members overlap a mosaic tile wall.
