Sharjah Modern

Sharjah Modern is a museum proposal for the Barjeel Art Foundation. It draws on the arcades, courtyards and wind towers of Sharjah's heritage buildings and carries its arcades from exterior to interior. White galleries are planned around a central courtyard, with 250 artworks by artists from across the Arab world selected for display.

The design uses triangular modules of limestone columns, paired to form an arcade of arches and stacked at different heights. At the top, the columns open into petal-shaped vaults that would shade the exterior spaces below. The central courtyard rises to a skylight, and its form is designed for natural cooling by the stack effect.
